My Little Pony Friends Forever #35 in shops 12/7/16

My Little Pony Friends Forever #35, featuring Twilight Sparkle and Starlight Glimmer, will be in comic shops on December 7, 2016. It's been a while since I've written My Little Pony for IDW; I'm really excited to be back!

The regular cover shown here, along with interior art, is by Jay P. Fosgitt, with covers by Jay (shown), Tony Fleecs, and Nidhi Chanani.

As described in the solicitation for this issue, "Twilight Sparkle and Starlight Glimmer tidy up the library in the Castle of the Two Sisters. What begins as a friendly activity soon turns into magic-based battle of egos and starts to transform the castle into a very dangerous place!"

Hope you check it out!

MLP for Halloween ComicFest 2016

Every year, comic book shops celebrate Halloween ComicFest by offering up FREE comics to their customers.

I'm thrilled that I wrote this year's offering from IDW, My Little Pony: The Haunted Dungeon. This issue is a reprinting of the "Friends Forever" I wrote a while back, and features art by Amy Mebberson, and cover art by Sara Richard.

Here's the description from the Diamond Previews solicitation:

"Strange things are afoot in the Crystal Empire so Shining Armor calls in his sister Twilight to help find the source of the mysterious occurrences. When the trail leads to King Sombra's dungeon, will the siblings find the culprit - or their doom? "

Stop by your local comic shop on October 29, 2016 to snag your free copy!

Legends of Oz: Tik-Tok & the Kalidah

Back in 2012, I was hanging out with Big Dog Ink publisher Tom Hutchinson at Heroes Con talking about his Oz/Wild West mash-up series Legends of Oz, when I asked him if there were any opportunities to write in that universe. Tom had pretty much handled all the writing of the popular series up to that time, but he ended up listing off characters for which he currently had no plans.

A couple months later, I emailed Tom pitching an idea using two of those available characters. The pitch involved two of my classic Oz favorites: Tik-Tok the clockwork "one-man army" and the patchwork animals known as Kalidahs.

I wanted to cast Tik-Tok and an exiled Kalidah as bounty hunters in the Wild West of Oz and sent along an outline for a mini-series.

I did end up doing a full script for the first issue and an outline for the mini-series back in January of 2014, but my own change of work circumstances in the interim meant that the talented Keith Thomas had to take over scripting the last two issues. I'm looking forward to seeing what Tom and Keith did with the full mini-series.

It took a few years for the mini-series to be published--Big Dog Ink comics are now distributed by Aspen Comics -- but the first issue of the three-issue mini-series will be in comic stores April 6, 2016. The book is listed in the February 2016 Diamond Previews catalog, under Aspen Comics on page 291.

Please check out the first issue, written by me, with art by Rei Renato, colors by Ceci De La Cruz, and with covers by Rei Renato and Nei Ruffino!

Creature Cops #1 in stores 1/28/15

This week, the first issue of my creator-owned miniseries, Creature Cops: Special Varmint Unit #1, hits comic shops! CC is being published by IDW, in alliance with Comics Experience. It's the first title being released as a result of the new publishing alliance between the two companies.

Creature Cops is about a ragtag group of animal control officers, trying to do their job...and survive in an alternate world where hybrid, gene-spliced animals are common.

The first short in this universe, at that time called "Animal Control: Special Creatures Unit," was the story I wrote for Andy Schmidt's inaugural online Introduction to Comics Book Writing course back in October of 2009. I'm SO happy for the full miniseries to finally be available!

"Creature Cops" is written by me, with pencils by Fernando Melek, inks by Novo Malgapo, interior colors by Juan Romera, letters/design by E.T. Dollman and edited by Paul Allor (Story Editor), Andy Schmidt (Comics Experience), and Bobby Curnow (IDW). The cover to #1, shown above is by Leandro Panganiban, with colors by Kevin Volo.

I'm pleased to share that Don McMillan's new all-ages novel, Kibbles 'N Bots: Tulip the Superpowered Boston Terrier, Book I is now available via Amazon Kindle!

I was fortunate enough to act as "Story Editor" on this fun romp -- I mean, super-powered dog versus insane robots...what more do you need to know?

Don is a good friend who I met through Comics Experience many years ago, and we are both part of the Brutal Circle writing group as well. He's a heckuva talented comic book writer in addition to a novelist.

Congrats, Don! And for anyone who'd like to download a copy right now, here's the Amazon link!

Creature Cops: SVU #1 Available for Pre-Order

Check out Creature Cops: SVU #1 in the November Diamond PREVIEWS catalog! You can find the solicitation for the first issue--the page shown here--in the IDW section.

With it being a new creator-owned book, if you'd like to make sure you local comic shop has a copy for you when the book ships in late January, please pre-order it! I can't emphasize enough what a huge difference pre-orders make for a new book...

Creature Cops: SVU #1 tells the story of burned-out animal cop Al Kaminski, as he investigates a death cult with ties to a case from his past. But, in the style of a police ensemble drama, it also follows all the officers of the precinct, in cases ranging from fighting rings to hoarding.

On the advertisement, you can also see the letter from Comics Experience founder and President, Andy Schmidt, explaining this new line of creator-owned comics coming from CE and IDW.

Upcoming titles include Drones, Gutter Magic, and Tet. I'm very excited about the whole new line!

Issue #1 of Creature Cops will ship in late January 2015 and the Diamond PREVIEWS code for pre-ordering right now is NOV140526.

I hope you check it out!

"Creature Cops: Special Varmint Unit" coming in 2015

Today, IDW Publishing and Comics Experience announced a new publishing alliance focused on bringing new creator-owned books to the market in 2015. I'm thrilled that "Creature Cops: Special Varmint Unit" will be one of those titles.

The first short in this universe, at that time called "Animal Control: Special Creatures Unit," was the story I wrote for Andy Schmidt's inaugural online Introduction to Comics Book Writing course back in October of 2009. It's been a long trip to the mini-series, but I'm happy to report the entire series is almost completed.

I can't wait to share more about the project as it gets closer, but if you'd like to read more about the IDW/Comics Experience deal, the press release is right here. And Andy's exclusive interview with Multiversity is right here.

The Gathering Alt-History Anthology now available

A year or so ago, I had a gap between script due dates and started looking around for a place to do a short comic story. When I heard about GrayHaven Comics' alternate reality anthology, I thought it would be fun to do an alt-history tale.

I ended up writing a script set in a world where the Roman Empire never fell and Rome controls North America. The story focuses on a leader of the American Revolution of 1896...Samuel Clemens, known in the underground by the name "Mark Twain."

Once I had a story in mind, I reached out to artist Angela Allen, a fellow member of the Comics Experience Creators Workshop who I had always wanted to work with. Happily, she was interested and the project was underway.

The five-page story is written by me, with pencils by Angela Allen, inks by Novo Malgapo, lettering by E.T. Dollman, and story edits by Paul Allor.

The anthology is now finished and available for order on the GrayHaven Comics website right here. If you like Alt-History stories, I hope you check it out!

My Little Pony Friends Forever #4 in comic shops 4/9/14

My Little Pony Friends Forever #4, featuring Twilight Sparkle and Shining Armor, just hit comic shops on April 9, 2014. This is my second gig writing My Little Pony for IDW!

The regular cover shown here, along with interior art, is by the talented Amy Mebberson. I can't wait for everyone to see what a great job Amy (and colorist Heather Breckel) did on the story. I especially loved the character design of the dreaded "Crystal Ghost" featured in the issue.

As described in the solicitation for this issue, Twilight Sparkle plans to spend some much needed quality time with her
brother, Shining Armor, in the Crystal Empire. However, when a mysterious ghost starts haunting the castle, the siblings will have to use all of their combined monster knowledge to save the day!

You can check out preview pages over on Equestria Dail.

"Femme Fatale" free to read on Challenger Comics right now!

A short comic I wrote, "Femme Fatale," is available to read FREE on Challenger Comics! I like to describe it as "a sci-fi crime noir in three panels."

Read it now: http://readchallenger.com/2014/03/read-femme-fatale-now/

The story features art by Lane Terasaki, colors by Juan Romera, letters/design by E.T. Dollman, and edits by Paul Allor.

I wrote it as part of a writing challenge over on the Comics Experience Creators Workshop, where we had to write a complete story in only three panels (inspired by the old Warren Ellis "Three Panels Open" blog).

I met Lane at a Creator Connection event at San Diego Comic-Con a couple years back. Juan, E.T., and Paul I've had the good fortune to work with many times in the past.

Check it out here.

Rex, Zombie Killer mini-series #3 in comic shops 2/26/14!

So, the next-to-last issue of our mini-series, Rex, Zombie Killer is in stores today, February 26th!

It features a true horde of zombies chasing a bunch of our favorite primates up the Statue of Liberty on the strip of Las Vegas. Co-creator and artist DaFu Yu went wild with the zombies on this one!

From the Previews catalog solicitation:

"Rex the Golden Retriever needs something that's in Las Vegas, but the city is infested with zombies. You think that will stop him? Don't worry, Rex has a plan...and it might involve gorillas."

And just a bit of a content warning on this one: this issue earns its TEEN+ rating, okay?

This is the lead-in to the final showdown with the evil Major and his soldiers coming in issue #4.

The story is by me, pencils and inks are by DaFu Yu, with interior colors by Juan Romera, letters/design by E.T. Dollman, and Paul Allor editing. The covers are by DaFu with colors by Kevin Volo.

You can check out more information on the Rex, Zombie Killer website.

The series is published by Big Dog Ink and will be at your Local Comic Shop!

New issues of MLP & Rex, Zombie Killer in February Previews catalog

Two new comic books I wrote are solicited in the February 2014 Diamond Previews catalog--which means they're available for pre-order from your Local Comic Shop right now.

The books will be in stores in April 2014.

First up is the second My Little Pony issue I've written for IDW; issue #4 of the new My Little Pony: Friends Forever series.

The cover and interior art are by the talented Amy Mebberson, who I met for the first time at NYCC this past year.

I've seen the roughs of the interiors, and I can't wait for everyone to see her work on this story! This tale focuses on Twilight Sparkle and her brother Shining Armor and is set in the Crystal Empire.

Then, on page 280, you can find the solicitation for #4 of Rex, Zombie Killer. This is the final issue of the mini-series and brings everything to a climactic finish at the "safe place"/military bunker. As always, this one features art by co-creator DaFu Yu.

More info on the mini-series is available on the Rex, Zombie Killer website: www.RexZombieKiller.com

Please let your comic shop know now if you'd like to pre-order the books!

Rex, Zombie Killer mini-series #2 in comic shops 12/18/13

Rex, Zombie Killer #2--my creator-owned book with co-creator/artist DaFu Yu--will be in comic shops this Wednesday, December 18, 2013.

This is the second of the four issues in the mini-series that follows Rex the hyper-intelligent Golden Retriever and his growing pack as they make their way to Rex's human...who is being held prisoner in a military bunker.

The story picks up from last issue's cliffhanger (the cover provides a "hint" of what that was)...but the second half of the issue is my favorite part. We'll see what the animals do when they find a small girl trapped in a car by rotters.

Those who got a kick out of the squirrels--or the gorillas--from last issue are going to enjoy what happens in the latter half of this issue, I promise!

But it's all building to something even bigger in issue #3. (Issue #3 is in the current Diamond Previews catalog for pre-order, by the way. Let your Local Comic Book shop know that you want the issue now, to make sure you can get a copy!)

As always, the story is by me, pencils and inks are by DaFu Yu, with interior colors by Juan Romera, letters/design by E.T. Dollman, and Paul Allor editing. The covers are by DaFu with colors by Kevin Volo.

You can check out more information on the Rex, Zombie Killer website.

The series is published by Big Dog Ink and will be at your Local Comic Shop!

My Little Pony Micro-Series #9, Spike in comic shops 11/13/13

My Little Pony Micro-Series #9, featuring the spunky Spike, will be in comic shops on November 13, 2013. This is the first issue of MLP I've written!

The cover shown here is Cover A, by Amy Mebberson, inspired by the poster for the film, American Beauty.

Interiors and Cover B are by Agnes Garbowska, and I couldn't be happier with how the artwork turned out.

I had the good fortune to meet both Agnes and Amy at New York Comic Con this year, and I am a big fan of their work.

Anyway, as described in IDW's solicitation, in this issue Spike takes on the responsibility of being a pet-owner. But he's going to get more than he bargained for when his Sea Beasts ("just add water!") arrive in the mail.

You can check out preview pages over on Comics Alliance.

Rex, Zombie Killer mini-series #1 in comic shops 10/30/13

Rex, Zombie Killer--my creator-owned book with co-creator/artist DaFu Yu--returns to comic shops the day before Halloween, in a new four-issue, bi-monthly mini-series. The series is being published by Big Dog Ink.

I'm happy to be returning to our tale of a hyper-intelligent Golden retriever and his small pack, including Kenji, the gorilla with a baseball bat! The animals continue on their journey across California, trying to reach a "safe place" with Rex's human in Nevada.

This issue picks up from the double-sized Rex, Zombie Killer One-Shot released in 2012, so in addition to Rex and his pack...and the zombies...we'll also be seeing more of the apes and monkeys who escaped from the zoo. If you missed the earlier issue, the "Story So Far" on the inside front cover will bring you up to speed.

Story by me, pencils and inks by DaFu Yu, interior colors by Juan Romera, letters/design by E.T. Dollman, with Paul Allor editing. The covers are by DaFu with colors by Kevin Volo.

You can check out more information on the Rex, Zombie Killer website.

Drop me a line and let me know what you think of the issue!
